Mamavation Monday: Injured List

I've been really proud of myself the past couple of weeks. I was all gung ho about doing the 2 week challenge, C25K and going to the gym. Then, Saturday I was out for a run for my last day of the 2 week challenge and I tore my meniscus :(. So I've been hobbling around trying to get everything ready for Christmas and i'm feeling very stressed!! My knee should heal in 2-3 weeks... if I rest... which I haven't been doing.

What is your biggest achievement of the year?
My biggest achievement of the year would have to be giving birth, that is one heck of a task! I'm really proud of myself and my whole family for adjusting easily to life with a new baby and i'm also proud of myself for losing the baby weight in 6 months! I've been having such a positive experience with the mamavation community, you girls seriously motivate me!

Mamavation Monday: First 5K!

Yesterday I ran in my first 5K ever! It was a holiday family fun run/fitness walk, so the whole family came along! It was tough, I am not a runner. I think I like the idea of running more than I actually like running. I'm hoping if I get out and run more that I will enjoy it as much as I think I do, haha! We finished in 41:55, which i'm not really proud of. We did have my 3 year old who was in and out of the stroller a few times, wanting to run and then getting tired, but i'm not really sure my time would have been much better without him there.

I also completed week 1 of the 2 week challenge this week. This has been my favorite of all the challenges! They really did a great job putting it together. Needless to say, I've been pretty sore all week long, but it's that good kinda sore. I feel great!

Oh and I also joined a gym. This is my first ever gym membership!!

How does your family support your weight loss efforts?
I have already lost close to 25 pounds and have been focusing my efforts more on getting into shape now rather than losing more weight. My family has been very supportive. My husband doing the 5K with me yesterday was huge! My mother and two of my girlfriends who had babies recently really encouraged me to join the gym and my sister is always willing to do any sort of outdoor activity with me! I am so thankful to have such a great support system here and of course I always have my mamavation sista's online!

Food Friday: Sausage & Veggie Simmer

This is a super easy dinner that I throw together when I don't have a ton of time! You can eat it how it is or serve it over whole wheat pasta or brown rice or even in a wrap. Next time I make it i'm going to try adding some shrimp.

1 package chicken sausage, precooked, diced (I usually use spinach & feta)
1 can Italian Style diced tomatoes, no salt added
1 small red onion, diced
1 zucchini, diced
1 yellow squash, diced
1 tbsp olive oil

-Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

-Add diced sausage and let it brown for about 5 minutes.
-Add the can of tomatoes (don't drain).
-Add the onion, zucchini & squash, cover and let simmer for 10-15 minutes or until all the vegetables are cooked through and tender.

That's it! So easy & it tastes great! Serve however you would like.

Here's the finished product:

Mamavation Monday: Creating a Better Fit

In the past 10 years I've been to the gym about 3 times. It's not because i'm lazy or hate exercise, it's because I feel awkward. The last time I went to the gym, it was just a huge room with every machine in it and space for weight lifting and floor exercises. Now, if you're like me and aren't a regular at the gym this can be a bit overwhelming. I remember I wanted to try out the elliptical, they were up on a platform, like a stage surrounded by mirrors. I could see the whole gym from up there, everyone effortlessly exercising. About 10 minutes in on the elliptical I was really starting to feel it, but as I looked around everyone else seemed fine. What was wrong with me? Why could everyone else do this so easily and I could not? I felt like a failure.

If there was something that the fitness industry could do to make the gym a better place for someone like me, it would be to split the gym into two rooms. One room would be for beginners, with all the same equipment and trainers there to help you with whatever you need. Everyone else in the room would just be starting out too so you would feel like you fit in. Then, when you're ready you can move into the more advanced room. Maybe you could do so with a buddy you met in the beginner room. I mean, if it was high school and you weren't good at math and they threw you into a class with people who were really good at math you would feel like a failure.

When it comes to holiday shopping, how do you make sure you stick to your budget ?
I usually make an individual budget for every person I need to buy presents for. I shop online and only look at gifts in that price range. Also, before I check out I do a search for discount codes on that website.

Food Friday: Seaside Potato Salad

My husband and I adapted this recipe from one I got in my "Dinner-in-a-Bag Kit" from my local farmer's market last summer. It's a great alternative to the same old mayonnaise-y, gloppy, potato salad!

1 leek, cut in half lengthwise & sliced thin.
2 lbs. waxy potatoes (fingerling or red potatoes) diced
2 peppers cut into large chunks
1/4 cup corn (fresh or frozen)
1/4 cup EVOO
salt & pepper

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
pinch of salt
pinch of sugar
1 tsp. Old Bay seasoning

-Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

-Slice leeks & place in a large bowl of cool water. Swirl them around with your hand so they separate and any soil will sink to the bottom. Lift the leeks out of the bowl and set on a clean towel to dry.

-On a sheet pan, toss the potatoes with the EVOO until they are evenly coated. Season them with salt & pepper and roast for 15 minutes.

-Add the peppers, leeks and corn and continue roasting for another 10-15 minutes or until the potatoes are golden brown & the peppers are crisp & tender.

-Whisk together the vinegar, salt, sugar & old bay seasoning and toss over the warm potato mixture.

-Serve warm or at room temperature.

Enjoy! :)

What I'm Striving For

I am striving for my family to be healthy & active

I never would have thought in a million years that my biggest struggle when becoming a parent would be getting my child to eat! I have literally tried every piece of advice I have gotten to get my son to eat something healthy. I've taken him grocery shopping, to the farmer's market, I made fruits & veggies fun, I constantly snack on healthy foods in front of him, i've bribed him, made a big deal if he tastes something and made him sit at the table until he put something in his mouth. Nothing has worked.

I have put so much energy into this and decided to take a little break for awhile. I mean, if it's overwhelming to me it is probably overwhelming to him. So instead of focusing on super healthy meals, they are healthy enough for now, i'm going to focus on having fun being active together as a family. I want to create great memories for my children while doing active things. We've had so much fun taking walks, hikes, going to the park, dancing with the wii & we're doing a family fun run 5k next week!!

Although I feel a little defeated with the food issue, I am so excited about all the active things we've been doing! I love finding new things for us to do and everyone looks forward to our activities!

Mamavation Monday: STRESS!

This week has been a little rough for me. I am so stressed out, I can't even pin point exactly what is is that's stressing me out. I feel like my stress is eating away at my insides, I can hardly eat or sleep. When I was 14 my dad passed away at the end of September so this time of year and the holidays always seem to be a little bit rough.

Sorry to be such a debbie downer! I got to take my boys out for a hike on Friday. It was such a gorgeous day and it was nice to be in the middle of nowhere! I think we might go again tomorrow and i've really been enjoying sending out my #FriendlyFitminder's on twitter. I'm glad I got all of that off my chest, I feel better already!

What are you thankful for in your life?

I am beyond thankful for my family. They keep me going when I feel like stopping & never fail to lift my spirits. I am also thankful to my fellow mamavation sistas who always have a kind or encouraging word when I need it the most!

Mamavation Monday: Did you exercise today?

Well I'm happy to say I almost completed the exercise plan I had for myself for the week. On Wednesday I had planned to take a 4 mile walk but it was cold & rainy & I have a little baby with a runny nose so I didn't think it was wise to take him out!! It's nice out today though & I set aside Sundays to make-up anything I missed so I will probably take my walk today!

One thing I struggled with this week was encouraging myself to workout. When I did the burpee challenge & the 2 week challenges I always had @PamelaMKramer or @MrBookieboo asking me if I had exercised that day. That was all I needed to get my workouts done. Just someone asking me. So I had an idea, if any of you would like me to tweet you daily & simply ask you "Did you exercise today?" please leave your twitter ID below or tweet me (@mamasarahjane). You don't even have to answer me, it will just be a gentle reminder. I think this will help me out as well because I don't like to be a hypocrite! Also, if someone else is already doing this, please let me know! I don't want to steal anyones thunder!!

What is your plan to avoid overindulging during holiday feasts?
I think Thanksgiving will be easy, we are going to my mother's house and she is a "health freak" there are usually tons of healthy options. On Christmas we usually have a pot luck dinner at a relatives house so I think if I eat a big breakfast before we go & bring a healthy dish to eat there I will be okay. I'll be okay, right??

Mamavation Monday: Week 6

It's amazing how one week can be so drastically different from the week before. Last week I was at my breaking point and this week, peace has been restored.
On Tuesday, I completed day 100 of the 100 Day Burpee Challenge. I had such a mix of emotions about it when I finished and put my video online, you can read about it and view the video here. On Wednesday my husband came home from India after 2 long weeks!
On Friday after procrastinating yet again on starting the couch to 5K program, I decided to come up with a workout plan myself that would not only help me out with my upcoming 5K but also "fix" some of my problem areas. I have swayback posture and pretty bad diastasis recti. I did some research about both of these and found some corrective exercises (mostly core) and made my own plan that incorporated those exercises along with a walking & running plan. I put the whole plan on a calendar and yes, I even bought stickers to mark off my days. I mean, who doesn't love stickers? I sort of used the 2 week challenge as my inspiration & i'm really hoping I get results because I had a lot of fun putting it together!
Speaking of the 2 week challenge, although I did get knocked off track with my wretched flu, I am almost done! I'm kind of bummed I didn't finish with everyone else but I am happy that I stuck with it!

Blogging carnival question:
What kind of activities have you done with a pedometer on?
I have mostly gone on walks with my pedometer on. I went jogging a few times and I would love to go on a hike sometime soon with my pedometer!

#100DayBurpeeChallenge - Day 100!

Today was the last day of the 100 Day Burpee challenge and I gotta say, i'm pretty proud of myself for finishing and i'm even more proud of myself for video taping it and posting it on the internet. I am my own worst enemy. All day yesterday on day 99 I was practicing in front of the camera about 10 at a time and then watching it and watching videos of other people doing burpees and thinking I wasn't doing it good enough. I seriously just wanted to call it quits. Thank God when I woke up this morning I was out of my funk, I told myself, this is the way I burpee and finishing the challenge my way is better than trying to do them perfect and giving up! So here it is, sorry it's so dark, I had like 5 lights on in the room!!!!

I just finished the #100DayBurpeeChallenge on!

Mamavation Monday: Week 5

Well, this week has pretty much sucked. I really miss my husband. My 3 year old was sick all night Sunday and Monday morning. When I brought him to preschool on Wednesday I was informed the school would be closing in 30 days and Thursday I had the flu. I had to drop out of the 2 week challenge so I could focus my energy on finishing the 100 Day Burpee Challenge. (It's day 97!) I've been wanting so badly to get to 10,000 steps a day but I've really been struggling with that. I'm normally a pretty optimistic person but it was just one thing after the other this week. I finally just decided i'm entitled to a bad week, it is what it is.

On the bright side, my husband comes home on Wednesday! I'm going to start C25K then so it should be a lot easier to get in 10,000 steps. I found a new preschool that I love for my son. I've made it through almost the entire 100 Day Burpee Challenge (3 more days!) and I will finish the 2 week challenge, just not with everyone else. Oh and I'm down to my pre-pregnancy weight! (Thanks flu!) I am looking forward to putting this week behind me and starting fresh!

Mamavation Monday: Week 4

Hi everyone! Things here are a little hectic right now, my husband is in India, we had a freak snowstorm that pretty much closed the whole state and my 3 year old spent all of last night throwing up. But, on the bright side, we still have power while most of the state is without power and heat and my son seems to be feeling better.

Today is day 92 of the 100 Day Burpee Challenge!! I'm also starting the new 2 week challenge today and I really want to start making an effort to get 10,000 steps in a day like some of you girls are doing. I think I took about a hundred this morning just trying to find my pedometer! I decided to wait for my husband to get home before I start C25K because it will be easier to get out and also he gets back the day after the burpee challenge ends so I will need something to keep me moving!

Happy Halloween!

Mamavation Monday: Gotta Run!

Well, despite some poor food choices this week, I did manage to lose a pound! I was baking for my son's 3rd birthday party for most of the day Thursday and Friday and kept forgetting take a break and eat something. I'm pretty sure I survived on cake scraps and burnt cookies, whoops!

Today is day 84 of the 100 Day Burpee Challenge and it is such an awesome feeling to be able to do so many burpees! The only bad thing is, the other day I tried to use the "I'm not strong enough to do this." excuse with my husband and he didn't buy it because he sees me doing my burpees every day!

Now, my most exciting thing to report: we signed up for our first 5K! I couldn't be more thrilled. It's a family fun run in December and it ends with a celebration in a Christmas Village! It should be a lot of fun and I hope to make a tradition out of it. I am going to start the Couch to 5K program soon. I'm a little hesitant to start it right now because my husband is leaving on Thursday. For India. For 2 weeks. :(. It's going to be tough to get out and run with my 2 boys and my niece who I have with me on most days. I just don't want to set my self up for failure.

Also, we were watching "How It's Made" the other night and saw that New Balance sneakers are made & assembled in the USA and they are the official shoe for the US Military. How awesome is that? We've been eyeing them whenever we see them in the store and I think we are going to buy some for the 5K. And now that they are working with mamavation? It just makes them more awesome.

As for this weeks question:
How would you brand your health and wellness lifestyle? How do you want others to know you in this area?
I would hope that I am somewhat of an influencer or motivator for a healthy lifestyle. When I believe in something, I tend to talk about it a lot, to everyone. So if I could make even a small healthy change in someone's life, I would be ecstatic!

Mambo Italiano

Cole has been eating pasta. A few weeks ago we couldn't even get him to touch any sort of noodle and now he is a noodle eating fool! It started at my moms house when he ate pasta with meat sauce and we expanded from there. The other night I made ditalini with tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash and chicken sausage and he ate that too! Then chicken carbonara! I'm so happy with this turnaround, Italian food has so many options and it is so easy to sneak additional healthy stuff into. I hope this is just the begining! Who know's what will be next! Chinese? Thai? Mexican? I'm going to have to have my creative juices flowing!

Mamavation Monday: Pledging the Sistahood!

I've been tweeting with the mamavation girls for awhile now during the 2 Week Challenges and the 100 Day Burpee Challenge. For some reason something has been holding me back on actually pledging to be part of the sisterhood. I'm not really sure what it was exactly but now I know I need to make some changes.

Shortly after I started this blog about getting my son to be a less picky eater, my husband went to the doctor for a physical. We found out he has high cholesterol, the doctor suggested some diet changes and that he should start running. So in addition to the #100DayBurpeeChallenge (Day 78, woohoo!) I'm going to start making some important changes in my diet (and my husbands). First, cutting out all the processed junk! I bought tons of fruits & veggies and lean meats when I went grocery shopping this week. Also, I want to start doing the couch to a 5k program soon! I'm thinking at the beginning of November and I want to find a 5k to run with my husband (who has been running everyday for about a week and has already lost 7 lbs.!!!)

I look forward to tweeting with the mamavation girls and reading their blogs. It is so awesome to have a support system like this!

As for this weeks question: What parts of your body are you especially proud of right now? What makes you love them?

This was a little tough for me to answer, I thought about it for a long time and then it came to me when I lifted up my shirt and said to my husband, "This stinks, the more weight I lose & the more I exercise, the worse my stomach looks." I was referring to the wrinkly loose skin that covers my entire stomach. But why shouldn't I be proud of it? It's the stomach that carried my 2 boys to 41 weeks each and it's the skin that is having less and less to stretch around and I can feel it getting stronger and stronger each week.

Over The Holiday Weekend

On Saturday night I decided to make Cole something he would actually eat, it's been a little heart breaking for me to send him to bed with out dinner every night so I made him his favorite; chicken nuggets and smiley face fries. He hardly even ate this. After we cleared the table he says "I'm so hungry! I need a snack, my tummy is grumbling". Such. a. stinker. I didn't give in though.

On Sunday I tried again with something he likes. Pizza. But, I made a margherita pizza with fresh mozzarella, parmesan, fresh tomatoes and basil. Everything was chopped up small so it wasn't as scary for him and with some coaxing he ate it! What a relief.

Then Monday came. We went out for a nice family lunch and some shopping and Cole was exhausted by the time we got home, he took a three hour nap! I decided to make some pasta that night since he had tried it and liked it at my mother's house the week before. Cole was still asleep when I ran out to the store to get some stuff to make a salad and when I came home my husband had already given him chicken nuggets and fries!! Well, I made the pasta with marinara with carmelized onions and roasted garlic for us and we did get Cole to try a bite.

Maybe there is some hope for this kid?

Day Four: Peas & Carrots

Last night we were finally home for dinner again. I made roast chicken, peas, mashed carrots & honey biscuits. Guess what Cole ate? A honey biscuit. We did get him to taste a pea and a carrot though. I just don't understand why he won't eat chicken unless it's in nugget form!!! Does anyone else have this problem?

Day Three: To Grandmother's House We Go

Last night was a big night, we went to my mother's house for dinner. We do this every Thursday night and normally everyone eats dinner while my husband and I try to get Cole to stay in his seat and plead with him to eat something, anything.

Last night was different. We sat him down at the table in between us and put a bowl of pasta and meat sauce (the same thing everyone else was eating) in front of him. He did his usual, said "Yuck, I don't like that!" and tried to squirm out of his chair. We told him he had to sit in his chair and that everyone else was eating the same thing and everyone else liked it. Then, something incredible happened. He picked up the spoon and put a noodle in his mouth and then another and another until they were half gone. My husband and I shot side way glances at each other as if to say "Do you see this! He's eating!" It was a joyous moment and I hope we have many more moments just like that!

We will make a good eater out of this kid one way or another!!!

Day Two: Hibachi

Last night we went out for hibachi for our anniversary and although Cole really enjoyed the show, he did not eat one thing. We ordered him the kids hibachi chicken, it came with white rice, noodles, veggies & soup. He let the cook try to fling broccoli into his mouth after all the other guys at the table did it, but then he realized what it was and screamed. At least his meal was really inexpensive and my husband had a nice lunch today!!

I do have some good new though! If you saw my Wordless Wednesday post yesterday, I made a rainbow out of different fruits. Cole thought it was pretty cool and he ate a couple apples and bananas and he even tried a blueberry! I know it's not much but it's definitely a lot better than he usually does.

Day One: Why I'm Here

So basically my son is a picky eater, extremely picky. I'm pretty sure the only things keeping him alive are crackers and pretzels. The handful of other foods he eats include cereal, pb&j, grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, french fries & pizza. That's it. Nothing healthy, no fruits, no veggies.

I'm not really sure how we came to this point. He used to eat everything I put in front of him, or at least give it a try. I loved cooking for him and I looked forward to our daily avocado we would split for a mid morning snack. I'm not really sure when the turning point occurred, things just kept coming off his list of things he liked eating until it ended up how it is today.

Today, my husband and I decided enough was enough. He is going to be 3 in a few weeks and his eating habits really need to change. I am no longer going to cater to him, he will eat what we eat... he has to right??

So tonight I made a pretty basic meal, nothing to scary. Just steak, steamed carrots and crescent rolls. I put about 5 carrots, 5 pieces of steak and a roll on his plate. When I put the plate in front of him, it was like the world had ended. He screamed, he cried and he yelled. Now, let me just tell you, it was no surprise to him that this was going to happen tonight. I made sure to talk to him all day about it. He helped me make the carrots and the rolls and held the door open for my husband when he was coming in from the grill with the steak.

We calmed him down and explained to him that we weren't going to force him to eat the food, that he just had to sit there with us while we ate and that he wasn't going to get anything else to eat before bed. We encouraged him to try the food and.... he ate the roll (of course) and he put one carrot in his mouth and promptly spit it out like it was the plague. He sat there with us until we were finished and then we got him ready for bed. After we put him in bed, I came downstairs and decided to blog about this whole experience. I have a feeling it's going to be a long journey and I know many other parents struggle with picky eaters as well!
