Mamavation Monday: July’s 5K

5k bib

Back in May when I ran the Color Me Rad 5k with my sister, we decided we would run one 5K a month.  I’m happy to say that we’ve been keeping up with this goal! On Friday night we did a Sunset Run to benefit a local rotary club.

It was a beautiful course that went through a park, around a lake and through some neighborhoods.  There were a ton of hills, though.  We ended up walking a bit, I’ve injured my knee on more than one occasion from running down steep hills and sister has hurt hers running up hills! Plus, neither one of us have been running as much as we used to and we definitely felt it.  I’m glad we did this race though, it gave us a little push of motivation and we are really looking forward to training for a race in August.

The sunset was so pretty as we were walking back to the car!

Accessorize Your Look With Jamie Bentley

I love accessories.  They can really transform the look and style of your outfit.  But, what I love even more is affordable accessories. My husband gave me a huge jewelry cabinet for Christmas this year and I’ve really been enjoying filling it up!

There is this great website called JamieBentley.com.  They have a huge selection of trendy, affordable, jewelry.  You can literally browse for hours through their assorted rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets and bangles.  The bangles were my favorite. They come in assorted mix and match sets, so it kind of takes the guess work out of being fashionable!

I got the “Karen” bangles for a wedding I went to last night.  I wore a LBD and accessorized with a black bow clutch and spiky maroon heels. The “Karen” bangles were a great addition and I got tons of compliments!

You can check out all the bangles and cuffs they have to offer here: http://www.jamiebentley.com/c-11-bangles-and-cuffs.aspx

#CTBloggers Meet up at J. Timothy’s!

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to meet up with some fellow Connecticut blogger’s.  The event was organized by Wendy & Greg from ConnecticutBloggers.com and graciously hosted by J. Timothy’s Taverne in Plainville.  Relic Brewing was also there with some samples of their amazing beers!

In addition to the samples from Relic, we were also treated with some samples of J. Timothy’s summer beer menu, banquet menu and regular menu.  I can honestly say that everything I had was phenomenal!

We had a Beef Tenderloin Crostini with a Gorgonzola sauce as an hors d’oeuvre before we sat down for dinner, the beef was really tender and sauce was just perfect.  Then when we were all seated they brought out the wings! J. Timothy’s is known for their “dirt wings” which were invented there about 20 years ago.  Dirt wings are fried and sauced, then fried and sauced again! They were really, really good! I tried Buffalo, Honey Gold BBQ, Teriyaki and General Tso’s.

This was followed by Butternut Squash Ravioli, Scallop Waldorf Salad, Pomegranate Pork Tenderloin and Haddock au Gratin.  Everything was so good! Even the haddock (and I’m not much of a fish fan.) My favorite though was the Pomegranate Pork Tenderloin, which they brought us knives for and according to my friend Wendy, “You know it’s going to be good when they bring you a knife!” The pork tenderloin was wrapped in bacon and served with a pomegranate balsamic glaze, over mashed potatoes and garlic spinach! ctbloggers

Me & Wendy!

For dessert they had these amazing chocolate truffles made with chocolate ganache and rolled in oreos and bread pudding made with cherry vanilla cheesecake. Oh my gosh, both were delicious!

I’m not much of a beer connoisseur, but I liked the samples I tried. Every one of them! My favorite by far was the Le Petit Abielle from Relic! It was a Belgian ale brewed with lavender and local honey. So, so good.

I had such a great time chatting with the other bloggers and Nikki from J. Timothy’s and Mark from Relic Brewing!

Mamavation Monday

I hope everyone is having a great summer! I’ve been trying my best to make these summer days count, without overscheduling our days.

This week I took my older son to a puppet show and children’s museum for a little one on one time. Then, we met up with the rest of my family and my in-laws for a little boat ride.

ferris bueller life moves pretty fast quote

This weekend was my weekend of facing fears.  On Saturday I went to a blogger meet up. I was super nervous, but I was so relieved to see my fellow Mamavation Sista, Wendy! We had a blast, I can’t wait to write a post all about it!

On Sunday the boys went to the lake with their grandparents and my husband and I grabbed lunch and headed off to an aerial adventure park.  (Post coming soon for this too!) I am terrified of heights but I really wanted to do this.  About halfway through the second course I was thinking that facing my fear wasn’t really helping me get over it, I was still terrified.  But then, after that I wasn’t as scared! It was such a great day and I‘m definitely feeling it today.  The hardest thing I did was swing on a rope into a rope net, then I had to climb the rope net that was suspended in the air and get onto a platform on a tree. I thought my arms were going to explode!!

Join The Labeling GMOs Evangelist Team

I have recently joined up with a team of blogger’s whose goal is to bring attention California Prop 37.  We want the people of California to say “Yes on Prop 37”.  This would mean that the state would have to label all food that contains GMOs. A similar bill was proposed here in Connecticut, but the section about labeling GMOs was eliminated before the vote.  According to Representative Richard Roy, one of the bills original sponsors:

“The labeling provision was eliminated from the bill due to fears that it opened the state up to a lawsuit. The attorneys for the leadership and Governor's office felt the Constitutional rights of Monsanto gave them the power to successfully sue the state. Their main duty was to protect the welfare of the state.”

So what are GMOs and why is it important that California says Yes on Prop 37?

CA Right to Know says that:

“A genetically engineered food (also known as genetically modified organism, or GMO) is a plant or meat product that has had its DNA artificially altered by genes from other plants, animals, viruses, or bacteria, to produce foreign compounds in that food. This type of genetic alteration is engineered in a laboratory, and is not found in nature.”

If this bill passes, packaged food companies in California will have to relabel their products by January of 2014.  We believe that the rest of the states will soon follow suit.

If you would like to get involved, please fill out this form to join the official GMO evangelist blogger team.

For more ways to help, check out this post about Labeling GMOs on the Mamavation site.

Mamavation Monday: Facing Fears

This week I spent finishing up the #2weekchallenge. I was happy to see the scale drop 1.6 lbs today when I weighed in.  I have been hovering around the same weight for awhile now and even though I’ve been pretty happy about it, its still nice to see a drop! I also did another day of C25K, I now only have 2 days left until I finish the program.  It’s been so hot and muggy out here that running just isn’t as enjoyable as it used to be.  However, I made a goal to run one 5K a month so I signed up for a sunset run for the end of July.

I’m really excited for this upcoming weekend.  I will be facing a couple fears which would normally give me anxiety but I am actually pretty psyched! On Saturday I am going to a blogger meetup. All by myself. And talking to people I’ve never talked to before.  Aaahh! I’m a little shy… or at least I used to be.  It only took me 27 years but I think I’m finally starting to get over my terrible shyness and I’m pretty sure it has something to do with my mamavation sista’s! (I love you girls!)

Another fear I hope to face is my fear of heights.  This huge aerial adventure park just opened a few miles from my house and I really want to go! My husband wants to try it out too, so we’re going to try to get a babysitter for a few hours this weekend and check it out! Now, I am not just “scared of heights” I am terrified.  Like, the other night I climbed on the top bunk of my sons bunk bed and I was scared.  This is something I really want to do though and I don’t want to be crippled by my fear!

O Story Story App Review

I recently received copies of a new line of interactive picture book and learning game apps for children by Parenting called O Story Story.  There are three different stories in the series and each has an additional spelling game app for download as well.

There are two different modes for the picture book apps, the “read to me” mode your child just has to watch and listen as the pages turn and each word is highlighted as it is read aloud to them and the “I can read” mode your child can read at their own pace. They can slide through the different scenes and flip the pages.  If they get stuck, they simply have to touch the sentence to have it read to them.  The pictures are also interactive and there are some puzzles and spelling flash cards along the way!

There is a separate spelling app for each story and includes pictures and words that correspond with the story.  I love how the spelling apps are set up.  It was really easy for my 3 year old to figure out.  It says each letter as it is placed correctly and spells and says the whole word once all the tiles are placed.

The stories themselves are great and educational too!

My son’s favorite is Max Moo and The Pig In The Blanket.

It follows Barnyard Detective Max Moo as he helps Mooreen Moody figure out why the barn is so cold. There are interactive animations and pop-ups to spell words or that ask if items are hot or cold. There is a matching game and a “Hot or Cold” game included with the story book app.

Wendy’s Giant List of Things To Do is a cute story about a little girl who is procrastinating before nap time. There are a ton of interactive pictures that when touched, will either label the item or animate it.  The only thing I did not like about this app was that the “I can read” and “Read to me” buttons were switched around so it wasn’t consistent with the other stories in the series.  Also, when it said the hints were on, they were actually off and vice versa.  This app also includes a matching game.

When Things Go Wrong With Robots is a funny story about a boy who is imagining all the things a robot could do for him if built one.  After he thinks of the good things a robot could do, he thinks about what would happen if the robot did the opposite. My son thinks this story is pretty silly! It has interactive puzzles, spelling pop ups and animations.  There is a matching game and a puzzle game included with this app.

I really love these apps, they are the perfect combination of fun and educational.  They keep my 3 year olds attention and I think they will be great for a long car trip we are taking later this summer! They are available on the iPad, Kindle and Nook tablet devices and on the iPhone as well.

Parenting’s O Story Story collection includes:

*I received free copies of these apps in order to facilitate a review, all opinions are my own.*

Mamavation Monday

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July! On Tuesday night we took a walk down to one of the local boat launches and watched the fireworks.  Then on Wednesday my mother-in-law took the boys for a couple hours so my husband and I could take the boat out and go fishing! I really had a great time and I wore a bikini for the first time in forever.  It was only me and my husband so I didn’t feel self conscious and it felt so great to feel the sun and warm breeze on my skin.

When it came time to head back to shore I pulled up the anchor all by myself! My husband didn’t think I was going to be able to do it and kept calling to me to see if I needed help.  It was tough, it was about 30+ feet down in the water and I had to keep pulling and then holding the rope in one hand while threading it back into the holder and then I tied it off.

We met up with my husband’s family and our boys after and went to a picnic where we played volleyball! It was such a fun and exhausting day but I was so happy that I was actually able to do all those things without feeling defeated.

Mamavation Monday

Earlier this week I realized I was having a serious case of workout ADD.  I usually do pretty good with challenges but, apparently three workouts to choose from wasn’t enough and I just wasn’t doing them! So I went in search of some new workout challenges.  I found a bunch and they all have to be completed by a certain time so I will have to do them!

I ran the Mamavation 5K on Saturday! I went out at 7 am and it was already 80+ degrees with an air quality warning, it was tough and I walked some of it but, I finished in 37:24 which is a new personal record!

I hope everyone has a great 4th of July!

Here are the challenges I’m working on in addition to the ones in my 4 Great Summer Fitness Challenges post.

C25K – finished through week 8 day 3

100 Pushups – finished through week 4 day 1

Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred – finished through week 2 day 1
