The REAL Awards

Are you looking forward to the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards this year? I know I am! But, I am also excited to learn about a new type of award that is being handed out this year. The REAL Award. We see many of our favorite actors and actresses playing health care workers and saving lives on the big screen, but what about the people who are actually out there doing this?

This year, the REAL Awards will celebrate these people. Is there a doctor, nurse, midwife or other health care worker that inspires you? You can nominate them for an award by November 29th!

Mamavation Monday

mondaysgraphicwbrown1

Whoooo! What a busy week! We got the house all cleaned early in the week so we could bring all our Christmas decorations in.  On Wednesday night we got together with some friends and family and on Thursday – Thanksgiving! We spent the long weekend putting up all our decorations and just hanging out together. Oh, and some where in there we started sleep training the little guy (it’s going good, so far!) and I had hiccups for 24 hours (so annoying.)

So my goals for last week were to drink more water and get in 10,000 steps a day.  Although, I didn’t reach my goal for steps every day, I did wear my pedometer and I was more aware of how much activity I was actually getting.  When I got on the scale this morning, I was happy to see I lost a half a pound! I know it’s not a lot but it is so easy to gain weight during the holidays, so any loss pretty fantastic in my book!

This week I am still keeping with my water and step goals and I am also going to try to get to the gym 1-2 times a week and do an exercise DVD at home at least once a week.  I am also going to cut back on dairy & sugar.  Hopefully the scale will continue to move in the downward direction!

Mamavation Monday: Let’s take this back to the start

mondaysgraphicwbrown1

I’ve decided that my ancestors must have been bears.  When the cold weather hits you can find me rifling through the cupboards looking for any food that is available for immediate consumption.  I move as little as possible (to conserve my energy, of course) and all I wish for is to be cozy and warm and asleep.  I am in hibernation mode and I am having a tough time combatting it.  After all, I am fighting my innate instincts.

These behaviors are not good for someone that is trying to stay in shape.  I’ve noticed my ‘get-up-and-go’ is gone.  So I’m taking baby steps to get it back.  This week I’m focusing on drinking lots of water and getting 10,000 steps a day.  I’ve noticed already that all the water intake is curbing my need to eat incessantly.  I’m hoping by next week this will become a habit and I will easily be able to make another healthy change!

nobody said it was easy

Celebrate #GivingTuesday

image

The season of giving spending is upon us and this year after the dust settles from Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I encourage you to join me in celebrating #GivingTuesday.

#GivingTuesday is a day to prove that giving back to our communities is part of a great tradition of philanthropy and volunteerism that helps make this nation strong.  Just as the retail sector has benefited from coordinating national shopping days around the holidays, #GivingTuesday wants to do the same thing for giving by uniting under one common purpose – charity.

Please visit GivingTuesday.org to see all the different ways you can get involved, whether it’s working with an organization or signing up to be a social media ambassador.  There are numerous ways to give back.

Also, you can follow #GivingTuesday on their social media platforms:

#GivingTuesday is not a new giving platform, but a call to action.

Kylie Minogue: The Abbey Road Sessions

Kylie Minogue’s new album The Abbey Road Sessions features sixteen tracks, all radically reworked, spanning Kylie’s incredible twenty-five-year career. It was recorded in London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios with Kylie’s band and a full orchestra. The album features many of Kylie’s best-known hits and previously unreleased tracks. Over all sixteen tracks, one thing becomes very clear—stripped of her high-end pop production, the emotional resonance of Kylie’s songs has never been clearer, and her voice has never sounded better.

I love how “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” was reworked for this album.  The pop song had a real soulful twist on it and was full of emotion.  The orchestra really added a lot of depth to all the songs and made this album not just another ‘hits’ album.

You can purchase the album on:

iTunes

Amazon (Deluxe)

Amazon (Standard)

Mamavation Monday, Monday, Monday!

I can’t believe it’s Monday again already, I was travelling and spending time with my best friend and my sister so the week flew by! The Nor’Easter that hit on Wednesday night ended up rescheduling our Halloween that had been previously rescheduled due to the hurricane.  It also unfortunately cancelled our flight out of New York City.  Luckily, my sister was able to reschedule it for later the same day and we only had to travel for 14 hours and visit 4 different airports to get to Phoenix! Sadly though, I missed my boys trick-or-treating when they were finally able to go on Saturday.

I had a great time in Arizona and I’m happy to say that we all stayed pretty active.  On Friday we visited the Desert Botanical Gardens and did tons of walking around the beautiful grounds.  They also happened to be having a Chiles & Chocolate festival, score!

And on Saturday I jumped off a cliff went hiking.

Most of the food I indulged on during my trip was also really fresh and healthy! My favorite was my dinner at a restaurant called Pita Jungle. I had a spicy coconut curry soup and a lentil salad.

I probably would have actually lost weight during this trip but we also indulged in some delicious beers. (:

Mamavation Monday

mondaysgraphicwbrown1

Well, I am happy to say we fared well against hurricane Sandy.  Nothing was damaged except a few trees and we lost power for four days.  This set me back on the 2 week challenge but I am finally all caught up! Unfortunately, it also set me back on getting ready for an upcoming trip.  It’s causing me some major anxiety to get everything ready but I am trying not to freak out! Vacations are supposed to be relaxing, right?

I’m hoping next Monday I will be in a much more relaxed and calm mood - until then!

Chris Mann–Roads

I just got through listening to Chris Mann’s new album, “Roads” and wow! I had never heard any of his songs before and I was immediately impressed the minute I heard his voice.  It’s just flawless and timeless.  He sings with such emotion and heart.  My favorite song on the album was his cover of ‘Need You Now.’ He put his own classical crossover twist on it that really made it special.

As a finalist on the hit NBC television series “The Voice,” Chris Mann
captured the hearts of millions while drawing the respect of multi-
platinum talents such as Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo. Following one of
his many dynamic live performances on the show, Aguilera told him, “I
feel the heavens open up when you sing.” America agreed, and when
the series ended, Chris had not one, but two songs on the iTunes Top 10
Pop Singles Chart.

You can hear samples of the songs on “Roads” or purchase the album (which I recommend!) on iTunes or Amazon.

Unjunk your Halloween with UNREAL

I know Halloween is over for most of you but here on the Connecticut shoreline it has been postponed until November 7th.  We are in the midst of recovering from Sandy and all of the downed trees and electrical lines have made it unsafe for us to venture out with the little ones.  Plus, many people are still without power.  We are going on 4 days, ourselves.

I’m pretty excited that it wasn’t cancelled again this year because I have some UNREAL candy love to spread!

2012-10-25 09.49.45

Have you tried UNREAL candy yet?

It is delicious and my 4-year-old actually prefers it over ‘real’ candy.  He asks for it by name! (Well, okay he asks me for ‘on-rail’ but I know what he means!) Okay, so now you’re probably wondering what the heck UNREAL candy is, if you’ve never heard of it before! It is candy that contains:

  • No corn syrup
  • No hydrogenated oil
  • No artificial flavors
  • No GMOs
  • No synthetic colors
  • Responsibly sourced ingredients

Sounds expensive right? Not at all! It is comparably priced to all the other candy on the shelf!

Plus, you don’t need to travel to a fancy health food store to buy the candy, it’s only available where junk food is available!

So, if you are still waiting to celebrate Halloween, please join me for an #unrealhalloween!

Disclosure: I was sent a variety of UNREAL candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters. As always, all opinions are my own.
