(Bridgeport, Conn. – June 25, 2014) – The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced that they will host the Stratford Brakettes softball team on Monday, July 14th at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in a Battle of the Sexes Game. The game will be a nine-inning contest played under fast pitch softball rules.
“What a fun, exciting and unique opportunity,” says Bluefish General Manager Ken Shepard. “The Bluefish are pleased to team up with the Brakettes and look forward to the first of hopefully many Battle of the Sexes games.”
While unique, this is not the first time that there has been a Battle of the Sexes game between professional baseball and softball teams. The Chicago Bandits, a member of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) softball league, have played in four of such games and currently hold a 3-1 record against the boys. This will be the first time that the Brakettes will be facing a professional baseball team in their organization’s history, however it is not the first time that a Brakette
player has faced a professional baseball hitter. Legendary Brakette pitcher Joan Joyce faced Hall of Fame Boston Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams in a charity event in Waterbury, CT back in August of 1961 and struck him out.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the Stratford Brakettes,” says
Brakettes General Manager Bob Baird. “This will be the coolest matchup since Brakette legend Joan Joyce struck out Ted Williams at the charity event. It should be a fun night for the Brakettes, the Bluefish and the fans of both teams.”
The Stratford Brakettes are currently one of the longest running competitive softball teams in the United States as 2014 will be their 68th year of softball competition and have won 28 national A.S.A. (Amateur Softball Association) Championships in their history. They have produced 22 National A.S.A. Hall of Famers and 13 Olympians during their existence as well. Currently, the Stratford Brakettes are an amateur team that feature some of the best collegiate and post-collegiate players in the nation and will host the Sixth Annual Women’s Major Softball National Championship in August at their home stadium, the Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford, CT.
Game time will be on Monday, July 14th at 7:05pm with
The Ballpark at Harbor Yard gates opening at 6:05pm.
All Box and Reserved Seats will be sold for $10 and there will be special group and suite rental rates. Tickets for the game are available by visiting the Bluefish ticket office, calling (203)210-BLUE, or going to www.bridgeportbluefish.com
