Last Saturday, my husband and I celebrated our 6th year of wedded bliss with our 3rd trip to Mohegan Sun’s BrewFest! We look forward to this event each year and each year it just gets better and better!
We got there early for the VIP tasting hour and made our way through the many beer vendors. There was a great mix of local craft beer breweries and the big time brands like Guiness, Shock Top, Heineken and Yuengling who recently started distributing to Connecticut.
I was happy to see a large selection of hard ciders this year and not quite as many pumpkin beers. I can only take so much pumpkin.
After we made it about halfway through, we took a break to grab some food. There was a great selection of awesomely-priced small bites from a variety of restaurants. My Husband grabbed a Guiness-boiled bratwurst from The Landsdowne Irish Pub & Music House and I grabbed some chips and guac from Sol Toro Tequila Grill, both located inside Mohegan Sun - both amazing.
Although there was no way I could have possibly sampled all 200+ beers on hand, I had a huge variety and was very satisfied by the time I left. A few stand-outs for me were:
Guinness Blonde which uses the 125-year-old Guinness ale yeast to brew an American style lager. It was a unique and flavorful fusion of the two-types of beers. I can’t wait to see what Guinness will brew up next!
Wachussett Brewing Company Green Monsta IPA was a nice, hoppy IPA that was very smooth and very drinkable.
Goose Island Matilda - I was won over by Goose Island’s Sofie at the first SunBrewFest a few years ago and wanted to try a different, but similar beer from them. Matilda was great! Fruity, spicy and smooth.
Ommegang Hennepin which I may have included with my favorites last year, but I’m a sucker for a good saison. You can’t really go wrong with coriander, orange peel and ginger and this one is one of my faves. Ommegang also offers Game of Thrones beers, to boot!
In addition to the beer and food there was also live music, games, giveaways and tons of photo-ops!
A friend had asked us why we chose to go to SunBrewFest instead of a popular large beer festival that was happening a little closer to home on the same day and the answer was easy! At Mohegan Sun you never have to worry about the weather, the beer selection is great, the food selection is great – usually at beer fests you have to buy from a food truck at their normal prices. The food at the SunBrewFest is extremely affordable. Plus, when you leave – you are at the casino! You can shop, have dinner, check out a show at the Wolf Den, gamble and stay overnight. The possibilities are pretty much endless!
We love Mohegan Sun!!
